I read recently that a quality webcam and the right program can simulate one of those barcode scanners that they use these days in libraries to check out books and movies. I even found a program that would scan the bar code on a book, look up the details online, and enter the information in a database so you could organize your home library.
After a few days of messing with it, I also discovered that the quality of webcam needed to do this is much higher than the quality of webcam that Toshiba puts in its Satellite laptops.
Looks like I’ll just be sorting movies alphabetical by title and books alphabetical by author the old fashioned way.

What I’ve found to be really annoying about those built in webcams is that the bloody machine is hard wired to only be able to use that one. I’ve *tried* plugging in external USB webcams. The machine refuses to see them *at all*.
bummer man
