Choosing the right domain name can be an important decision. The right domain name can have people landing at your site by just guessing the URL. For example, if you wanted to visit ABC’s website, you wouldn’t need a search engine to know that it’s at abc.com and you wouldn’t be hitting the search engines to figure out that if you’re bored and need something to entertain you the you might try bored.com.
Choosing the wrong domain name, on the other hand, can give potential customers the absolute wrong idea about what it is you’re trying to accomplish with your website. That’s what happened with websites like “Teachers Talk” (www.TeacherStalk.com), “Childrens’ Wear” (www.ChildrenSwear.co.uk), and, my personal favorite, a website that sells pens called “Pen Island” (www.PenisLand.com).
I recently found a list of the Top 10 Worst Domain Names and another list of 20 More Unfortunate Domain Names. At least some of the names on those list had to be deliberate – The Royal Tit-Watching (Ornithological) Society Of Britain should know better than to use the domain www.Nice-Tits.org.
