It’s payback time
Welcome back!
I’m sure that as kids my generation had several words and phrases that drove our parents up the wall. Now that we are parents, our children are paying us back for what we did to our parents. For example, I hear conversations like
First Kid: Will you stop that!
Second Kid: Whoa! Angry much?
What’s THAT? One of the first things they teach in English grammar is that every sentence must have a subject and a verb. That last sentence has neither.
Another one that makes my skin crawl is the phrase, “I’m just sayin’”:
If you keep eating like that you're going to weigh 400 pounds. I'm just sayin'.
We know you’re just sayin’; everyone heard you say it.
And my personal favorite is when someone ends a sentence halfway through by saying, “ummm… yeah.”
He had too much to drink and tried to drive home. This other guy pulled out in front of him and... ummm... yeah"
Like I said, I’m sure that this is, like, payback for all the times that we, like, threw in the word “like” in, like, all these places that it, like, didn’t belong. I can’t wait to see what the their kids come up with to drive my kids up the wall… I’m just sayin’.
