Who are YOU listening to?

Welcome back!

I’ve noticed an interesting trend on the local radio stations. The DJs are obviously not using their real names on the air. I can understand that’s a privacy thing. When I was a kid, the girl who lived next door had a part-time job at a radio station. Since this was an AM talk-radio station, most of what she had to do was play tapes of pre-recorded shows and stop to give a weather report every so often. Her last name was Fields, but on the air she used her real first name and the last name Rivers.

I can understand that, but what gets me is the fact that the DJ’s around here are using names that are OBVIOUSLY fake. In the last month, I’ve heard radio personalities using the following names:

  • Yancy Mills - this is the name of a town in southern Missouri.
  • John Ritter - an actor who dies a few years ago, most famous as Jack Tripper on Three’s Company
  • Ken Loggins - A singer. His works include Footloose and Return To Pooh Corner
  • Delta Dawn - Give me a break! Delta Dawn was the (fictional) subject of a song by that name that Tanya Tucker wrote back in the early 1970s.
  • Agent 99 - This fictional character was played by Barbara Feldon and was Maxwell Smart’s partner on Get Smart back in the late 1960s. I’m assuming that Agent 99 was in the recent movie based on the series, but, to be honest, I haven’t seen it and I probably won’t.

On a semi-related note, I keep getting phone calls from some guy who gives his name as either John Smith, David Smith, or George Smith or something equally generic, always with the last name Smith. It’s obvious from his voice that he’s from a part of the world where the name David Smith is about as common as Achmed Reuliio would be in Texas. Hell, the man can’t even correctly pronounce the name he’s claiming is his own! I know he’s a bill collector calling my wife about a bill that we don’t honestly owe, so i’ve gotten to the point where when he calls and asks if he can talk to her, I say “No” and hang up the phone.

Granted, I am using a name that is obviously fake on here, but then I’m at least using a name that I made up instead of “borrowing” someone else’s name.
