She’s had the surgery

Welcome back!

Those of you who follow this blog on a regular basis may remember that back in January I mentioned that Daughter Number Three was going to have to undergo surgery for scoliosis.

The aforementioned surgery happened on Wednesday, April 15. We arrived in Little Rock bright and early Tuesday morning so she could get to her 10:00A.M. pre-operative appointment. This was more or less four hours worth of, “Here’s what we’re going to do. Do you have any questions? Here’s how we’re going to do it. Do you have any questions.” with some blood tests thrown in for good measure.

I had no idea her blood type was AB-! If I remember correctly, isn’t that one of the rarest blood types around?

They also measured her height, both before and after the surgery. Before surgery she was 5′5″ tall and when they measured her afterwards they said she’s 5′9″ with the stipulation that she wasn’t really standing as straight as she could (morphine, you see) and standing straight she’d probably be closer to 5′10″.

Wow.

That’s a gain of about 5 inches in an afternoon! And they said that her back still isn’t 100% straight. They never get it 100% as I understand it. If they did, that kid would be looking me in the eye… and I’m 6′1″.

When she gets off the pain medications she’s going to be very pleased with her new look. Not to mention the fact that, just like me, she’ll have some really cool x-ray. Mine because I’ve got two artificial heart valves, and hers because she’s sporting steel (titanium?) rods on either side of her spine.
