How do you ‘forget’ a $34,000 debt?

Welcome back!

I saw on the news last night that Barack Obama’s Treasury Secretary-designate Timothy Geithner, “forgot” to pay $34,000 in self-employment taxes from 2001-2004.

Ummm… How?

Seriously, how do you FORGET to pay $34,000 in taxes over a three year period, especially when the IRS is issuing the occasional reminder?

This sounds like something I heard Steve Martin use in a stand-up routine back in the 70’s: “Oh, I’m sorry, officer, I FORGOT that armed robbery is a crime”.

That sure sounds like the ultimate excuse:

“Your honor, I forgot that she is married to someone else.”

“Boss, I’m dressed this way because I forgot that we shouldn’t wear sexy lingerie to the office.”

“Doc, I forgot that paint thinner isn’t safe to drink.”

I had several more sarcastic examples I was going to use here, but …

(wait for it)

(say it with me now)

…I forgot.
