Dual boot problem solved
Welcome back!
Since I started complaining on this blog about my trouble getting Ubuntu Linux set up, it seems only right that I should announce that I found a fix for the problems I was having.
First off, I gave up on the Ubuntu 8.04 LiveCD I was using and tried using 8.10 instead. That installed and was able to see my hard drive correctly. The only problem at that point was the fact that I found myself unable to set my screen resolution any higher than 800 x 600. A week or so of searching on http://www.ubuntuforums.com finally led me to someone else who had the same problem about a year ago. The suggestions he was given all involved making changes to a file called /etc/X11/xorg.conf. While the earlier (and, therefore, simpler) suggestions didn’t help him, they did the trick for me.
Once I got Ubuntu set to the resolution I prefer, I installed the kubuntu-desktop package so I could use KDE instead of GNOME. I also found a website explaining how to remove GNOME entirely, but when it came out, it took a few things I like (such as firefox and all the card games) with it, so I went back and added the ubuntu-desktop package as though I ad installed fom the Kubuntu LiveCD and was adding GNOME for the first time.
Next I need to find a linux program that can edit videos the way Windows Movie Maker does. My plan is to replace all the Windows progerams I use with Linux equivalents and then drop Windows completely.
