My router is bizarre

Welcome back!

When we upgraded to high-speed internet, our ISP gave us a Westell router that I think is on drugs. When it establishes a DSL connection, it reports

DSL Connect Rate (Down/Up) 1728 Kbits/sec by 32 Kbits/sec

If, however, I leave it turned on but disconnect the phone line from it for a few seconds, then when it reconnects it reports

DSL Connect Rate (Down/Up) 1728 Kbits/sec by 352 Kbits/sec

That makes no sense to me. I keep wondering if it would even be possible to go get a Linksys router to replace it or has my internet provider got some sort of proprietary software inside this thing so that an off-the-shelf model won’t work?

I don’t think you can just replace the modem with a random Linksys, but you could certainly talk to the ISP to try and get a new modem if you are having issues with it. Or just take the line out of the modem and connect that to a router… that is the typical route.
