Tomorrow’s the day

Tomorrow’s the big day. I’m leaving with Daughter Number Two and we’re going to Fulton, Missouri and I’ll be returning Friday afternoon, alone. She’s moving into her dorm room at Westminster College and starting classes before long.

I’ve learned a little bit of trivia about that area. Fulton is located in Callaway county, Missouri. About 15 years ago I lived in that area for a short time and one thing I never understood was people’s habit of referring to “The Kingdom of Callaway”. I thought it was just an egotistical thing, but I’ve since learned otherwise.

While I still don’t quite have all the details, I have been told that during the Civil War, Callaway county seceded from the Union and did, in fact, consider itself a Kingdom.

I’ve also learned that Callaway County was named after Capt. James Callaway, a grandson of Daniel Boone.

I can’t help but wonder if Callaway county had anything to do with Callaway irons golf clubs.
