Today’s the big day

Our family does something a little different when it comes to birthdays and such. Because we’ve had two daughters attending schools on opposing ends of the state and The Aunt and Uncle are always included in those celebrations, we tend to put off the actual birthday celebration and gift exchange until all the various schedules can be made to coincide. Sometimes this has, in the past, meant having the birthday person wait as long as a month, or have their gift presentation combined with that of the next birthday on the calendar (Daughters Number Three and Four have birthdays that are three days apart, and Daughter Number One’s birthday is three weeks after that).

This time has got to be a record, however. My birthday is in mid-March and, between various high school graduations, college interviews, and hospital trips, we’re just getting around to the actual “celebration” today. This means that what we’re celebrating today is a combination of birthdays for me, my mother-in-law, and The Aunt, as well as Father’s Day. If it had gotten put off another couple of weeks the we could add The Uncle’s birthday to the mix.

I’m really not complaining at all though. Birthdays haven’t been a really big deal for me in decades. However, there are these young people around who still enjoy making a big todo over them.

The delay has, however given me extra time to bug my wife (all in good fun, of course) about whether she got me another season of MacGyver on DVD or a new digital camera or a big box of used cisco networking equipment.
