It’s that time of year again

Well, here we go again. The high school band has started selling cookie dough. That’s their standard fund raising technique: convince kids to badger people into spending $12.50 on a 3-pound tub of cookie dough. This is to raise money for band camp or the every-few-year trip to Florida.

What gets me about it is the way they have always tried to make the kids feel inadequate if they don’t sell enough of this stuff. Even if you’re talking about some kid who already knows he’s not going to band camp or Disneyworld, he’s supposed to break his neck selling cookie dough to people who should be buying fitness equipment instead so that everyone else can afford to go.

That’s just not right.
