Happy New Year

Happy 2008! I trust you were all out too late ringing in the new year.

The routine at this end of the internet was the same as it has been for the last 7 years or so - the six of us gathered around the table around 7pm and started a game of Trivial Pursuit. New Year’s Eve is the only day all year when that game comes out of hiding because we all stink at it. We’re all bad enough that a game started at 7:00 will last up until midnight - and that’s if we play the “short version” described in the rules!

Daughter Number Two was the first-place winner this year. She beat us all in a record-breaking two hours! Because Tradition calls for it, we then went on to get second- and third-place winners. I won second place and my wife placed third. By this time it was 11:45pm and, after almost 5 hours of having this game demonstrate how much we’ve all forgotten of what little we ever actually knew to begin with, nobody was interested in finding a fourth-place winner.

I’ve been wondering about other New Year’s traditions, most notably the tradition of gathering in Time’s Square and watching The Ball drop. WHY is that entertaining? It’s not as though that stupid ball is going to do anything interesting. I mean, really. It sits atop a pole mounted on top of a building and people stare at it for as much as six hours waiting for the last 10 seconds before midnight when the ball slowly slides down the pole it’s mounted on. At exactly midnight the ball reaches the bottom of the pole and lights up.

woot.

Personally, I could have more fun with my cat, Max, and a flashlight. Of course, I’m not allowing for the fact that by midnight most of the people in Time’s Square have just spent six hours getting drunk. I suppose if I was that schnockered then I might also find The Ball Drop to be entertaining.
