Ah, the good ole’ days

When it comes to television. our family doesn’t have much interest in the typical network fare. A few Christmases ago, my wife bought her mother a DVD set containing the first season of The Waltons. Since then, every member of the family has gotten a season or three of some TV show from the 1960s, 1970s, or 1980s.

So far, our combined collection includes:

  1. The Waltons
  2. Three’s Company
  3. The Greatest American Hero
  4. The Dukes Of Hazard
  5. Bewitched
  6. Full House
  7. Doogie Houser, M.D.
  8. The Brady Bunch
  9. The Partridge Family
  10. McGyver

and I’m probably still forgetting something!

It’s really interesting watching these old shows with kids who weren’t born when the shows were running new. For example, while watching The Brady Bunch, we had to explain to our kids that, in spite of what it looks like, families usually didn’t solve all their problems in 30 minutes with no raised voices as seen on tv, but, on the other hand, people really did dress that way. In fact, last night I looked at this hideous lemon-yellow and baby-poop-green striped shirt that Greg Brady was wearing and I exclaimed, “I used to have a shirt just like that!”

Ah, the good ole’ days.

Yeah, I’ll have to agree, that is an impressive collection - and with Christmas coming up, it wouldn’t surprise me to see it grow some more.

No complaints, though. I’ve seen the ads for what’s passing for entertainment these days, and I want no part of it. ;)
