A new kind of search engine

While meandering around the World Wide Web last night, I came to rest at Spock.com. This is a fascinating site that allows you to search people by either their name or a tag, such as their occupation, likes, or just about any characteristic. A search for “left-handed”, for example, returned over 1300 results! You can also create your own entry and, if you’re so inclined, include pictures of yourself and links to your various homes away from home on the web. As a Spock member, you’re allowed to add tags to other entries, too. For example, because of the lateness of the hour, the only Spock search I could think to do was for Leonard Nimoy. I knew he was an actor and I knew he’s written at least a couple of books and released a music album or three, but if some Spock member somewhere hadn’t added a “photography” tag to his entry, I never would have known that Leonard Nimoy was also an accomplished photographer.
Spock has another feature I like: they provide you with the code necessary to put your search results on a web page. Now when you turn up unknown facts about your favorite actor or singer or whatever, instead of trying to convince people to search for themselves, you can paste a few lines of code into your website or blog and have the results speak for themselves, like so:
I’m not going to get a chance to do this today because I have a 6-hour drive that I’ll be starting in about an hour or so, but tomorrow or so I’ll probably be adding my own profile to spock.com, just for grins. In the mean time, I must be really off.
It’s that time of the week again and I have to go get Daughter Number Two from school for the weekend.
