Why the author has said ‘No’ to thoof.com

The diligent reader may have noticed that the author is not using the Thoof badge to promote postings on his blog. This can be explained very easily.

The author has, on occasion, put the Thoof badge on some posts on the older version of his blog. Then his wife was submitting several entries on her blog to thoof.com when, out of the blue, she received an email (presumably automated) from thoof.com which said, essentially, “We have noticed that your blog entries are written in first person. We would like you to write them in third person”.

Now, the author has a couple of real problems with this:

  1. This blog does not belong to thoof.com and their “requirements” for how the author writes blog entries means exactly nothing until such time as thoof.com’s owners pay the hosting fees associated with The (Other) End of the Internet.
  2. Articles written in third person simply do not fit the style in which the author writes. They tend to come out sounding like a cross between a legal document and utter nonsense, as the post you are currently reading demonstrates.

That said, the reader should now understand why the thoof badge will never again appear on a blog owned or operated by the author.

I think you misunderstood the email that you received (I’m guessing it was from me).

We don’t ask that users write blog entries in any way, you are correct to point out that its your blog and we have no business telling you how to write it.

We do, however, ask that the titles and summaries of the stories submitted to Thoof are written in the third person, and in an unbiased manner. This is because these are what appear on Thoof’s front page, and we want them to be accurate useful descriptions of what is being linked to.

    Regards,

    Ian.
