I am not a suitcase

It’s been another one of THOSE days.

To start with, let’s talk about getting my daughter off to college. Someone’s gotta pay for that. The good folkss in the financial aid office got her all the grants and scholorships they could, and she came up a few thousand dollars short. Their suggestion was for her parents to apply for something called a PLUS loan - which we start paying back in 90 days. Her parents’ suggestion was that they find another way because the idea of us getting approved for a loan is laughable. Their explanation was that if Mom and Dad get denied the PLUS loan then the kid can get an unsubsidized loan - which she’ll be paying back beginning six months after graduation.

Long story made short:

The gal on the phone says we’re approved for the PLUS loan.

A couple days later, we get a letter saying we’ve been denied the PLUS loan. We call the school and the kid applies for an unsubsidized loan.

A day or two later, we call the school to make sure that everything’s set to go. They tell us that we were approved for the PLUS loan.

THAT SAME AFTERNOON, another letter arrives in the mail informing us that we did not, in fact, qualify for the PLUS loan.

Remember the Samsonite ad where the gorilla is abusing a suitcase in his cage? I’m starting to feel like the suitcase.

How is it possible that within the exact same company, three people are unaware of what’s going on? Yes loan, no loan, yes loan. :head desk:

A few thousand for college isn’t that bad, she was very lucky with the grants and scholarships - that’s for sure. I hope she enjoys her time there. What’s her chosen major?

The whole thing reminds me of the trouble my mother-in-law is having with the people at medicare/medicaid. First she qualifies for help with her medicare premium, then she doesn’t, now she might again… (shakes head sadly).

Ya, the kid seems to be enjoying her time in college - a little too much, if you ask me. She’s been gone almost a week and has managed to find a party to attend every night so far. She’s a Phys Ed major. Plans on being a track coach/gym teacher/history teacher.
