Trivia for 7/15/2007

Just to be sure of my facts, I checked the definition of the word “hemp”:

hemp n. Cannabis. The tough, coarse fiber of the cannabis plant, used to make cordage. Any of various plants similar to cannabis, especially one.

Given that definition, I’m really surprised that some drug addict or another over the last 231 years hasn’t smoked the thing!

I hate to undermine you, and I know this isn’t necessarily an authority, but Wikipedia says that the “hemp” story is a myth, and that it was actually printed on something called “parchment”.
That said, even if the hemp thing had been true, I’ve got to believe it’s kept under pretty heavy security, so the hypothetical drug addict you speak of would have to be hard up. Anyway, “pot heads” aren’t really “drug addicts”. I don’t like pot use as I see it’s a gateway drug, but still I’ve never known a pot head who acted like an addict at all, and while there is a debate one whether you can be addicted to marijuana, I’m of the opinion you can’t.
If you’ll go have a look at my “disclaimers” link that’s on every page, you’ll see that it says
“The ‘Trivia’ category will be used to post odd little tidbits that I’ve collected over time. No attempt has been made to verify the statements in the ‘Trivia’ category. That job falls to the reader.”
In other words, I’ve never bothered to see if it’s true or not, so you may well be right.
Re: my ‘drug addict’ comment, that was probably a poor choice of words on my part. I knew several pot heads when I was in school and, you’re right, they didn’t act like the classic addict. These particular guys just acted like morons.
