When did pain become funny?

Remember when shows like “America’s Funniest Home Videos” could actually go for an entire thirty minutes making you laugh without showing people getting hurt?
What has happened? Now days AFHV can’t seem to go more than a minute or two without showing some poor guy getting hit in the family jewels or falling off of something way too high.
The last straw came this evening, during the local news. The sportscaster was showing a video of an Indy car slamming into the wall at around 200 mph. The guy’s comment was to the effect that everybody just wants to see the wrecks - or words very close to that meaning.
I was irritated enough to email him and mention that I thought that was a somewhat barbaric thought. He emailed me back explaining that he was only making a joke.
A JOKE.
We still don’t know if the driver of that car was injured because that little tidbit wasn’t important enough to make the news. This driver probably has a family somewhere who all had to go get their BROWN pants after watching that wreck, and this guy’s making a JOKE.
WHY is it funny when someone hits a concrete wall at 200mph?
I don’t get it.
