I titled this post “There Ain’t No Justice” because this is one of those days for me when that seems to be true:

There was a time not too long ago when I smoked about a pack of cigarrettes a day. I’d tried several times to quit but never made it more than a few months. I think my record was six months.

When the doctor told me in March of 2005 that I was now and forever going to be a heart patient, I made the decision to stop smoking. I figured I didn’t need the extra complications that smoking would cause.

It’s been 27 months since I’ve picked up a cigarrette. That’s 27 months during which I’ve had to remind myself daily that I was not going to smoke any more. My wife has told me that she was impressed with how I quit “cold turkey”. I’m of the opinion that there is no other effective way to quit. Quitting smoking, for me at least, is not just a one-time thing, though. I’ve quit smoking every day for over two years. It’s been a struggle, but I’ve been willing to do it because it was better for my heart.

My heart. Which needs surgery again. Sigh. All those times I fought back the urge for a smoke, and I’m having more heart-related problems anyway.

:-( I need a smoke!
