Graduation

Last night I attended my oldest daughter’s graduation ceremony. I still have a hard time believing that she’s 18 and about to be thrown to the wolves. It seems like just yesterday she was getting in trouble in third or fourth grade for throwing one of her shoes at a teacher who had incurred her wrath. (I’m sure she’ll appreciate my having shared THAT with the world:) )
As I sat there watching the ceremony, I couldn’t help contrasting last night with my own graduation 25 years ago;
- She had a “graduation ceremony”. I had “commencement exercises”.
- Her class consisted of 102 graduates. Mine was closer to 400
- Her ceremony featured speeches by 5 of the graduating seniors. Mine featured speeches by one or two students plus several Guest Speakers, none of whom I remember at this point.
- Her classmates talked about how their class was the worst in the school’s 43-year history. My class, on the other hand, was the Least Spirited Class in the (at the time) 75-year history of my school.
- The Seniors last night were anxious to get the ceremony over with because they had an all-night lock-in party to attend - where there were cash prizes…starting with $50 for every Senior who walked through the door. My “graduation party” consisted of Bill & DeeDee, Jamie, Barry & Debbie, Larry, and myself watching movies, playing video games, and drinking beer.
Sitting through the ceremony last night made me realize how glad I am, even after all these years, that I’m done with high school. I heard at least one kid last night say he would relive it a thousand times if he could. Not me. Not on a dare!
