Good news: the new CPU arrived today.
Bad news: it made no difference whatsoever in the way the computer works. When I press the power button, it may or may not come on and, if it does, after a random number of seconds from 0.1 to 30, it will shut itself back off. A call to the local repair shop got me the suggestion that it might, in fact, be the power supply, so I went back to eBay and now I’m waiting on the U.S. Snail again.
Sigh.
