This evening, ABC News ran this article talking about how kids are bringing cell phones to class and capturing videos of teachers freaking out then the kids are posting the videos on youtube.com
The article goes into a big rant about how the kids are violating the teachers’ privacy and how the kids need to learn to respect the teachers. They quoted someone as saying, “If they were videotaping, they weren’t doing what they were supposed to be doing.”
HOLD THE PHONE!
I saw the videos they referenced and, frankly, the kids are the LEAST of the problem.
I don’t see how you can complain about having your privacy violated when your acting like a jerk IN PUBLIC. If these kids were filming the teachers at home, then it would be different. If, on the other hand, someone walks into a room where he knows there are 35 or 40 other people, most - if not all - of whom are minors, and proceeds to throw chairs around and yell things like “Shut the f*** up” and calls the group “a bunch of f***ing monkeys” then, in my opinion, he should be glad that all he got was a video on youtube.com. I’d be surprised if some parent somewhere didn’t file a lawsuit.
When I was in school (There’s a phrase I promised myself I’d never use) if a teacher acted that way on Monday, then by Tuesday he’d be looking for a new line of work and we’d have a new teacher. Period. That fast, no questions asked.
Of course, back then teachers were allowed to actually discipline kids so there was incentive for the kids to at least be quiet if they weren’t going to listen or do the work. I remember Mr. C. and his paddle that was nicknamed “Bad News”.
Ouch.
But it worked…
… and I’m not damaged for life because of it
